How to change your name

In the UK, changing your name is straightforward. You simply need to execute an Unenrolled Deed Poll. This document declares that you are abandoning your previous name (often referred to as your "deadname") and assuming your new name.

Once the document is signed and witnessed, it is immediately valid. You can then use it to update your records.

Updating your title

You do not need a Deed Poll or a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) to change your title to Mr, Miss, Ms, or Mx. You can simply ask organisations to update your title.

However, when generating your Deed Poll with our service, you can specify your new title on the document. Having your new title printed on the Deed Poll often makes it easier to convince banks and institutions to update their systems without pushback.

Updating the gender marker on your UK Passport

To change the name on your passport, you only need your Deed Poll.

To change the gender marker (M/F) on your passport at the same time, HM Passport Office requires one of the following alongside your Deed Poll:

• A Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC)
• A new birth or adoption certificate showing your acquired gender
• A letter from your doctor or medical consultant confirming that your change of gender is likely to be permanent

Updating the DVLA

You can update your name on your driving licence using your Deed Poll. The DVLA will also update your gender marker on your licence record based on this application (the gender is encoded in the 7th and 8th characters of your driver number).
