Changing Your Name on Your UK Driving Licence

It is a legal requirement in the UK to tell the DVLA immediately if you change your name. Failure to do so could result in a £1,000 fine. Fortunately, updating your driving licence is completely free.

What proof does the DVLA need?

The DVLA will not accept a simple letter or email telling them you have changed your name. They require documentary evidence. An original, signed Unenrolled Deed Poll (or a solicitor-certified copy) is fully accepted by the DVLA as proof of a name change.

How to update your driving licence

  1. Get your Deed Poll: Use our service to generate your Deed Poll, then sign it with your witness.
  2. Get a D1 form: You can order a D1 form online from the Gov.uk website, or pick one up from most large Post Office branches.
  3. Complete the D1 form: Fill out the form with your new details. You do not usually need a new photo unless your appearance has significantly changed or your licence is expiring.
  4. Post your documents: Send the completed D1 form, your old driving licence (both the photocard and paper counterpart if you have one), and your original Deed Poll to the DVLA.

Will I get my Deed Poll back?

Yes. The DVLA will return your original Deed Poll to you. However, it is often sent back in a separate envelope from your new driving licence, so don't panic if they arrive on different days.

How much does it cost?

Changing your name or address on your driving licence is free. You only need to pay if you want to change your photo at the same time.
